Discover your dreams

The concept of discovering your dream does not exist for some people. They just know what they are supposed to do and this is through life experience. Nevertheless for others, it’s another process.

Today, I’d like to offer you some ideas to create an environment that will help you find your dreams.

*The steps do not follow a specific order. You can always jump back to strengthen yourself.

(1) Step 1: Know yourself at a deeper level.

(1.1) Here are some basic questions that can help you understand yourself a little better:

(1.2) Random questions: I believe it’s important to have an answer to some random questions. It might give you ideas about yourself more.

  • e.g.: What’s your favorite color? What’s your favorite food? etc.

  • Action: go google “100 questions to know you” and go through them.

(1.3) Art exercise: Really interesting drawing exercise to know better about yourself. See where you are and where you want to head towards. Drawing to know yourself better.

(2) Step 2: Try new stuff

You know a little bit more about yourself and you can distinguish what you like from what you dislike. It’s time for you to find your new interests or strengthen your current ones.

What you can do: (Experience life, again!)

  • Make a list of things you always wanted to try and go through it one by one. (The list might change as you discover new things.)

  • Stimulate your 5 senses

  • Go on a trip.

  • Conquer your fears

  • Go to the library. Read books that gets your attention.

  • Google everything you are curious about.

One new thing will lead to another new thing.

“You discover your purpose by taking action. You don’t find it through thought.”

“You’re looking to give your life meaning. You’re looking specifically for internal validation and self-worth (the feeling inside you’re doing something worthwhile) and external validation from providing a service to the world around you.”

(3) Step 3: Ask yourself more questions.

Now that you found your interests, you have to ask yourself some more questions. Those questions come from your own exploration. You can always go back to step 1 questions and create your own questions. *Some of your old answers might change.

“Don’t forget who you were, who you are and who you want to be.”

If you still haven’t found your dreams by now, don’t worry. You can always work on yourself. Become a better person. Change your bad habits into good habits. Improve your skills. Eventually, you’ll find something that you are good at and that makes you happy. Something that is worth your time.

You have an idea of what you want to do. You have set your goals and dreams.
The journey can finally begins.

(4) Step 4: The old environment is not enough to support your new dream
You’ll soon realize that the environment you were before does not help you grow stronger and get closer to your dreams. People around you will be shocked by your sudden change. Resistance to change is normal. You’ll have to work hard on your dreams and show them that your decision is the right thing to do.

A lonely road, but not for too long…

While you work on your dreams, you’ll find people that support your dreams. Those people are the ones that will help you become a stronger person. You do the things you like to do. People like the things you do. BOOM! New relationship. Good stuff.

Action: Find ways to create a new environment that support your new interests.

(5) Step 5: Make your dream sustainable.

To continue doing what you like to do. You need to find ways to feed yourself, so money is the fastest way. If you have enough money to just keep doing what you like, good for you. For the others out there, let’s find ways to live and follow our dreams in a sustainable way.

(5.1) 9 to 5 job and free time.

You want to find a job where you can work from 9am to 5pm (8h/day) during week days, which will give you enough income to feed yourself, but also enough time to work on your dreams.

24h breakdown:

  • Work: 9AM – 5PM: 8h

  • Sleep: 9PM to 5AM: 8h

  • Maintenance (Grocery, cooking, poop, shower, etc. ) : 2h

  • Free time: 24h – (8h + 8h + 2h) = 24h -18h  = 6h

    • Weekday = 6h * 5  = 30h

  • Weekend: (6h + 8h) * 2 = 28h

  • Total free time for the week: 28h + 30h = 58h

  • Total hours in a week: 7*24h =168h

  • % Free time during the week: 58h/168h = 34.5%

So, you have 34.5% of your time or 58h per week or 6h per day of free time + weekend to enjoy your passion. But, it’s not enough. You should have 100% of your time enjoying what drives you.

(5.2) Free time to passive income:

The idea here is use the free time you have to “do something” related to your “dream”, which can help other people at the same time. In this way, when the money you generate through your hobbies cover your expense, you no longer need to work.

Google up “Passive income” and see how your “passion” can be monetized.

Live a life doing what you want to do. 好きなことやれ。

*I still believe some hobbies should be kept as hobbies. When you add money stress on things you enjoy doing, you will quickly stop enjoying it.

Quotes:

“Don’t look at how other people live their lives. The answer is within you.”

“You changed. Don’t try to recreate the past.”

“No rush; Enjoy every steps of your life.”

“Process is more important than results. Enjoy the process.”

“We are all different and are missing different things in our lives, be honest with yourself and you’ll know what you really want.”
